study conducted by researchers at University of Michigan have described this phantom vibration phenomenon. Daniel Kruger, research assistant professor at the University of Michigan, School of Public Health, found that people with higher attachment anxiety and high levels of insecurity in interpersonal relationships are more prone to phantom phone rings and notifications.

The team of researchers from University of Michigan conducted a research on 411 University of Michigan students. The study was done to determine the number of times the respondents experienced phantom phone calls and vibration. 309(approximately 75%) participants reported to have experienced phantom vibration.
Dr. Kruger, further elaborated that high ringxiety is reported in people who suffer from high relationship anxiety.

People have become extremely dependent on social media and phones nowadays. As a result, people who do not push others away to maintain a psychological distance, are less likely to report phantom cell phone experiences.
